Saint Mary’s was once again awarded a Hospital Safety Grade of “A” from the Leapfrog Group
Reno, Nevada (November 21, 2023) – Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. This national distinction is the fifteenth “A” in a row that Saint Mary’s has received, and it celebrates Saint Mary’s achievements in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors.
Since 2016, Saint Mary’s has continuously received an “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group, the longest active streak of any hospital in Northern Nevada. Leapfrog uses more than 30 national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and information from other supplemental data sources. Taken together, those performance measures produce a single letter grade representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.
“Earning an ‘A’ Grade means Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center made a true commitment to put patients first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, Board, clinicians, staff and volunteers that all had a role to play in this achievement.”
Over sixty percent of Prime Healthcare’s hospitals across the United States received an “A” grade for the Fall 2023 cycle.
“To receive 15 consecutive ‘A’ marks in a measure that deals so heavily with patient safety reflects not only the skill of our clinical team, but our commitment to quality,” added CEO Derrick Glum. “Saint Mary’s proudly continues to be a trusted source for healthcare in our community, and these types of awards certainly reinforce that as it speaks to our hospital’s ability to provide safe, expert-level care.”
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has also been recognized year over year among the top hospitals in the nation for clinical excellence and quality, becoming the only hospital in Nevada to receive Fortune/PINC AI’s™ 100 Top Hospitals award for four consecutive years. On top of this, a recent publication by Newsweek ranked Saint Mary’s as the top hospital in Nevada, joining Mayo Clinic, Mount Sinai, Cleveland Clinic, and other top systems who received similar honors in their respective states.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
