Glioma Tumor
The most common type of brain tumor is the glioma, accounting for approximately one-third of all brain tumors. Gliomas originate in the glial cells, including ependymal cells, oligodendrocytes, and astrocytes. These tumors come in various types and grades, indicating their level of aggressiveness. Dr. Sina Rajamand and the team at Saint Mary’s Brain and Spine Surgery offer expert diagnosis and treatment for glioma tumors at our Reno and Northern Nevada locations.
Types of Glioma Tumors
Glioma tumors come in various types and grades, each affecting the brain differently. These intra-axial tumors grow within the brain’s substance and intermix with normal brain tissue. Some common types of gliomas include:
- Brain Stem Gliomas
- Astrocytomas
- Mixed Gliomas
- Ependymomas
- Optic Pathway Gliomas
- Oligodendrogliomas
- Glioblastomas
Gliomas are classified by grade, with low-grade I and II tumors being less aggressive and high-grade III and IV tumors being more aggressive. While the exact cause of gliomas is unknown, they can occur at any age, though adults are more commonly affected. Not all gliomas are malignant, but glioblastomas and most high-grade gliomas are considered cancerous.
Symptoms of Glioma Tumors
Glioma tumors can cause a range of symptoms, primarily due to pressure on the brain or spinal cord. The specific symptoms and their severity depend on the tumor’s location, type, size, and maturity. Common symptoms include:
- Headaches
- Nausea or vomiting
- Seizures
- Changes in behavior or personality
- Numbness or weakness in the arms, face, or legs
- Speech difficulties
- Blurred vision or vision loss
- Dizziness
- Changes in cognitive abilities
Symptoms may develop slowly or be absent initially, with some individuals living for years without realizing they have a glioma until discovered through medical exams for other issues. Diagnosis involves a comprehensive neurological exam, brain scans (MRI or CT), and possibly a biopsy.
While there is no cure for glioma tumors, various treatment options are available. Dr. Sina Rajamand will recommend the least invasive and most effective treatments based on the type, grade, and symptoms of the glioma. Treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and ongoing observation.
