Risk Factors and Meningioma Symptoms

The exact cause of meningioma tumors is not known, but certain risk factors are associated with their development. Women are three times more likely than men to develop a meningioma, and the majority of these tumors occur in individuals aged 70 or older. Those who have undergone radiation therapy or have neurofibromatosis type 2 are also at increased risk. Symptoms of meningiomas vary based on their type and location, but common symptoms include:

• Seizures
• Blurred vision
• Headaches
• Weakness in arms or legs
• Numbness
• Coordination issues or loss of balance
• Memory loss
• Hearing impairment

Meningiomas can occur in different parts of the meninges, including types such as skull base, convexity, falcine, intraventricular, sphenoid wing, posterior fossa, olfactory groove, and suprasellar meningiomas. Recurrent meningiomas can occur if the tumor returns after removal or treatment.

While small meningiomas that do not exert significant pressure on the brain may be monitored without immediate intervention, larger tumors that cause brain dysfunction typically require surgical removal. Common surgical approaches for meningioma include craniotomy, which involves removing the tumor through a small opening in the skull, and endoscopy, which uses an endoscope inserted through the nasal passage to access and remove the tumor.
