Carpal Tunnel Decompression Surgery
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the wrist’s carpal tunnel. This narrow passage is formed by the carpal bones and the transverse carpal ligament, with limited space for the median nerve to move or stretch.
The median nerve provides sensation to the thumb and the index, middle, and ring fingers, while also controlling the muscles at the base of the thumb. The nine tendons responsible for bending the fingers and thumb, known as flexor tendons, also pass through the carpal tunnel. When these nerves or tendons become compressed, it can lead to various symptoms, including numbness, tingling, burning sensations, pain, shock-like sensations, radiating pain up the forearm, and weakness in the hand and fingers.
Median Nerve Release Surgery Near Reno, NV
In a median nerve release surgery, also known as carpal tunnel release, Dr. Rajamand aims to increase the size of the carpal tunnel and reduce pressure on the median nerve using a surgical microscope. Specialized tools are used to divide the transverse carpal ligament, creating more space within the carpal tunnel. The ligament will heal with additional room, relieving the pressure on the median nerve. This outpatient procedure typically allows patients to return home the same day, with prescribed hand exercises and therapy to aid in recovery and strengthen the hand and finger muscles.
Dr. Rajamand will provide detailed information about the procedure and your recovery plan during a consultation at Saint Mary’s Brain and Spine Surgery. Contact our Reno office and medical clinic to schedule an exam and consultation when you suffer from increasing pain and weakness in the hand.
