Saint Mary’s Recognized with 7 Five-Star Achievements from Healthgrades

Reno, Nevada (October 26, 2023) – Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, announced today it has achieved numerous five-star accolades for specialty care, according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor.

Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center’s Five-Star ratings include cardiac pacemaker procedures, hip fracture treatment, spinal fusion surgery, treatment of pneumonia, carotid surgery, gallbladder removal, and treatment for respiratory failure. These five-star ratings reflect the hospital’s commitment to consistently delivering the best care possible and places the organization in the upper echelon of hospitals for specialty care nationwide.

“Healthgrades congratulates Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center for being a national leader and demonstrating a deep commitment to providing high quality care to all patients,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “As health systems nationwide endeavor to elevate their quality of care, these elite facilities provide a roadmap for success. We commend Saint Mary’s for their dedication to excellence in patient care.”

Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center was also named by Healthgrades as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for spine surgery and prostate surgery, in addition to receiving the Spine Surgery Excellence Award™ and being placed among the top 10% in the nation for spine surgery. Furthermore, Saint Mary’s was a recipient of the Patient Safety Excellence Award™, placing the hospital among the top 5% in the nation for patient safety.

“It is an honor to have the incredible care that our team provides on a daily basis highlighted in such a fashion as this,” said Derrick Glum, CEO of Saint Mary’s Health Network. “These accolades, many of which are being awarded for up to the tenth consecutive year, reflect a dedication to quality care and patient safety. I am extremely proud for the unmatched care that our highly trained, committed healthcare professionals provide to every patient we have the privilege of treating.”

Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has also been recognized year over year among the top hospitals in the nation for clinical excellence and quality, recently becoming the only hospital in Nevada to receive Fortune/PINC AI’s™ 100 Top Hospitals award for four consecutive years. On top of this, a recent publication by Newsweek ranked Saint Mary’s as the top hospital in Nevada, joining the likes of Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Mount Sinai, and Cleveland Clinic who received similar honors in their respective states.

Healthgrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes: risk-adjusted mortality and complications. By focusing on what matters most–patient outcomes–Healthgrades ratings provide critical feedback for both patients and hospitals. By offering easy access to objective performance measures, Healthgrades gives consumers the information they need to find a hospital that excels in providing the care they need. And, by shining a light on strengths and weaknesses, Healthgrades ratings help direct hospitals to opportunities for clinical improvement.  The 2024 hospital assessment evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 35 common conditions and procedures at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to identify the top performers.

The 2024 Healthgrades analysis revealed that the variation in performance between five-star and one-star hospitals continues to widen, making it increasingly important to seek care at top-rated programs. From 2020 through 2022, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to five-star hospitals, on average, 215,667 lives could potentially have been saved, and 149,521 patients could have avoided potential complications.*
