Saint Mary’s is the only hospital in Northern Nevada to receive the patient safety award
Reno, Nevada (April 4, 2024) – Saint Mary’s Health Network, a member of Prime Healthcare, announced today that it has been recognized as a 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient by Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor. Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center is the only hospital in Northern Nevada to be recognized with this Patient Safety Excellence Award, and this is the 8th year in a row that the health system has received the designation. Being a Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient reflects Saint Mary’s commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care.
“Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has cultivated an outstanding safety culture that prioritizes the well-being of both patients and staff, setting a high standard for patient safety nationwide,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades. “We’re proud to recognize Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center for providing top-quality care while preventing serious injuries to patients during their hospital stay.”
Healthgrades’ analysis revealed that patients treated in hospitals receiving the 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award have a significantly lower chance of experiencing one of the four leading safety indicators than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals:
- In-hospital fall resulting in fracture (approximately 52% less likely)
- Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (approximately 56% less likely)
- Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (approximately 67% less likely)
- Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital (approximately 71% less likely)
“Saint Mary’s is proud be amongst the recipients of the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award,” said Derrick Glum, CEO of Saint Mary’s Health Network. “This award recognizes our clinical staff’s hard work and dedication to keeping patients safe year after year, and it reflects our continuous commitment to providing the highest quality care to patients in Northern Nevada. If you want safe hospital care in the greater Reno area, no other hospital is safer than Saint Mary’s.”
For the study, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to determine this year’s top-performing hospitals for patient safety. Echoing the importance of patient safety, the study found that nearly 170,000 potentially preventable safety events occurred among patients in U.S. hospitals, with the four patient safety indicators accounting for close to 75% of these incidents.*
In addition to the award from Healthgrades, Saint Mary’s Health Network has been recognized for a myriad of accomplishments, such as earning a Leapfrog Group “A” Hospital Safety grade for the 15th time in a row, being named the Best-In-State Hospital in Nevada by Newsweek, and ranking among the 100 Top Hospitals from Fortune/PINC AI. A pillar of care for over 115 years, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has been a cornerstone of the Northern Nevada community, representing both a rich history and cutting-edge healthcare for patients in the area.
