Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center earns “A” for Social Responsibility from Lown Institute

Reno, Nevada (June 25, 2025) – Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, has been recognized by the Lown Institute for outstanding social responsibility, the only northern Nevada hospital to receive an “A” grade in the category on the 2025-26 Lown Institute Hospitals Index. Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center achieved this honor through strong performance across metrics of health equity, patient outcomes, and value of care, out of more than 3,500 hospitals nationwide.

“Hospitals are facing unprecedented political and financial challenges,” said Vikas Saini, MD, president of the Lown Institute. “In this uncertain environment, it’s more important than ever to support the socially responsible hospitals who are delivering high-quality care to all in their community.”

Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center ranked #2 overall in Nevada for social responsibility, behind only fellow Prime Healthcare member North Vista Hospital located in Las Vegas. According to the Index, Saint Mary’s received top marks across multiple other categories, including Value of Care, Inclusivity, Avoiding Overuse, and Cost Efficiency. These are independent rankings and hospitals do not apply or pay to be listed.

“This recognition from the Lown Institute reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering equitable, high-quality care to every patient we serve,” said Derrick Glum, MBA, FACHE, CEO of Saint Mary’s Health Network. “Our teams work tirelessly to ensure that value, compassion, and equality are a daily practice. Being the only hospital in northern Nevada to receive an ‘A’ grade affirms our role as a trusted community partner.”

Saint Mary’s was also recently recognized as the only hospital in northern Nevada to achieve the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for 2025, and was also acknowledged by the Leapfrog Group for earning an “A” grade in patient safety. These designations serve as a testament to the superior quality and safety measures that are continuously upheld at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

The Lown Hospitals Index for Social Responsibility is the only ranking to combine metrics of health equity and value of care alongside patient outcomes, for more than 2,700 acute care and 800 critical access hospitals nationwide — offering a holistic view of hospitals as total community partners. In the sixth annual rankings, the 2025-26 Lown Index evaluates hospitals on over 50 measures including novel metrics such as community benefit, racial inclusivity, and avoidance of overuse. Data sources include Medicare fee-for-service and Medicare Advantage claims, CMS patient safety data and hospital cost reports, and IRS 990 forms, among others. Full methodology can be found on the Lown Index website.
