Reno, Nevada (May 3, 2023) – Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. This national distinction is the fourteenth “A” in a row that Saint Mary’s has received, and it celebrates Saint Mary’s achievements in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors.
Since 2016, Saint Mary’s has continuously received an “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group, and it is the only hospital in all of Northern Nevada to achieve this streak of excellence.
“This new update of Hospital Safety Grades shows that, at the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “But this hospital received an ‘A’ despite those challenges. I congratulate all the leaders, staff, volunteers, and clinicians who together made that possible.”
The Leapfrog Group assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. Seventy-five percent of Prime Healthcare’s 45 hospitals across the country currently hold an “A” grade.
“Our team works diligently every day to ensure that we are providing the very best care for all of our patients,” commented CEO Derrick Glum. “We are honored to be continuously recognized for this achievement, which is one of the many testaments to our staff’s commitment to safety in our day-to-day patient care.”
Saint Mary’s has recently been recognized by several organizations for patient care excellence. Fortune and PINC AI rated Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center as the third best cardiovascular community hospital in the country, and the Lown Institute ranked the hospital amongst the nation’s best for social responsibility. In addition to this, CEO Derrick Glum was also listed on Becker’s Healthcare as a “CEO to Know,” and was the only leader in all of Nevada to be recognized.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
