New Hospital Safety Grade for Fall 2024 is a national recognition for commitment to patient safety
Reno, Nevada (November 26, 2024) – Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, a member of Prime Healthcare, earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center earned the “A” grade during the same time period that saw other regional hospitals receive “B” and “C” marks for safety. Additionally, Saint Mary’s was recently named to the 100 Great Community Hospital list from Becker’s Hospital Review after receiving multiple clinical recognitions from U.S. News and World Report, and became the only hospital in northern Nevada to be awarded the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for 2024. Per the Lown Institute Hospitals Index, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center also ranked #1 in Nevada for value of care, receiving “A” grades in Patient Outcomes, Clinical Outcomes, Inclusivity, and Avoiding Overuse.
“Receiving an A-grade from The Leapfrog Group for hospital safety is not only a tremendous honor but reflects a daily commitment to quality and safety that helps improve healthcare in our community,” said Derrick Glum, MBA, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer of Saint Mary’s Health Network. “Our clinical teams are highly-trained, skilled professionals that care deeply about the care and well-being of every patient we have the privilege of meeting, and I am incredibly proud to have our hospital recognized accordingly.”
Over the last year, 85 percent of Prime hospitals earned “A” ratings from The Leapfrog Group.
“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
